Sweltering in the Desert

much needed weekend getaway in palm desert…I guess I was the only one that didn’t realize it would be 100 degrees everyday…in my defense, it was in the low 70s only 2 hours away

we headed over the Joshua Tree not too far away…came across this abandoned house on the way to the national park…that ‘keep out’ sign is a bit scarey

turbines on the way back to palm desert…energy!

Living Desert

left to right: 2 month old giraffe, mama giraffe, not sure what kind of bird, goat, owl (look closely and you can see us in his eyes), not sure but he’s from Africa =)

we saw this large empty exhibit where the cheetah was supposed to be but no cheetah…as we were leaving he came running out with his lunch…gorgeous animal

on the day we were heading out…the temperature had dropped significantly from 100 to 58 degrees…and it was very cloudy and foggy…we pulled over to capture this shot…

Joe + Nora in the Flower Fields

we would’ve missed the Carlsbad Flower Fields by 1 week…good thing we made it just in time…Congrats and big ups to Nora & Joe!

we were being defiant and crossing over the “caution” tape…

Low tide in Crystal Cove

I feel as though I’ve been neglecting the ocean lately…seascapes that is. So I was eager to capture the ocean but I had 2 criteria…1) low tide and 2) clouds in the sky. We all know that photos are considerably more interesting when there are clouds out. I’ve been relying on the tide app on the iphone to determine when to expect low tide and keeping my fingers crossed that there would be clouds in the sky on that very day. Crystal Cove State Park was a great location for low tide and guess what? There were clouds in the sky…see for yourself…

after hiking for a while (yes, we “hiked” at the beach across sandy and rocky terrain) we made it down the beach. It was still pretty bright due to the time change so I took the opportunity to snap some shots of my favorite model (my hubby). I think this shot shares a little glimpse of his personality…if you know him…you know exactly what I mean

ohhhhh the sunsetting is here…look at that sunburst!

remember those clouds I was telling you about? Well, here they are…along with the visitors and departing sun

the sun finally set which created this bright orange sky that lasted for about 5 minutes. See that swirly rock formation over there? It reminds me of a mini Roman amphitheatre. Who knew all this was hiding under the water.

as we were heading back I couldn’t help noticing the lush hills at the beach…there was ocean then rocks then hills filled with flowers…

I slowed the shutter down a little to capture the movement in the grass…subtle movement from the wind off the ocean

one last look back at the ocean…that person above had the same idea…”just one last look”

Flowers on a Mission

the San Juan Mission is not only a good location for portrait photography but landscape and macro as well…that was evident by the 7 other photographers walking around with their digital SLRs and tripods

the sun was pretty bright by 9am but here’s a backlit flower…so delicate and hairy

bee buzzing around this yellow flower…look at those little spikes

the front of flowers always get all the attention but the rear is pretty nice too…I think the sprinklers had just gone off

I’ve been staring at this photo and daydreaming about what could be beyond the fog…if you stare long enough more of the tree line begins to emerge…spooky

The trail is open again…

So the trail has been closed for a while now (over a month) and it re-opened yesterday…

I couldn’t make it there yesterday but was determined to get some sunrise shots instead of sunset shots…arrived there at 5:45am with our bikes…ready to ride the trail and take some shots along the way…only to be stumped by a THICK marine layer…we couldn’t see 5 feet in front of us.

once the sun came up we started on the trail…this is the first shot…can anyone say AVATAR???

here are the different perspectives of the trail we were on…

we couldn’t help noticing tons of these black spikey thingys…all over the leaves on the trail…thorns everywhere

the husband stumbled upon this gopher skull…he has a very good eye because this thing was no bigger than my thumb…I thought this would make for an interesting shot

as we were exiting the trail…and packing up…I came across this snail trying making his way across the path…then the ladybug in the tall grass…and this very interesting (ugly/pretty) flower

Early Morning Walk

my husband woke me up at 6:30am this morning (on a Saturday) to go for a walk and take photos…turned out to be a long 2 hour walk

lots of flowers are still blooming after the long rainy weekends

came across a ladybug with a heart on her back (thinking of you Ishmael)

on our way back I came across this tattered baseball and I wanted to capture just how many games and dog bites its seen…

Spring Flowers

Everyday, before and after work, I pass by an open lot that now has amazing wild spring flowers. Needless to say, I’ve been itching to photograph them…Enjoy!
